Back in August of 2015, life took an unexpected change for my cousin Scott’s family. His oldest son Seth, a then avid soccer player and all-around great 10-year old kid began having hip pain in the midst of a soccer tournament. When the pain intensified and traditional treatments of physical therapy failed to help, his family knew something was seriously wrong. Eventually, Seth was in so much pain that even going up steps was too painful and he needed help with many daily tasks. Despite his suffering, doctors could not find anything wrong. It wasn’t until much later at the end of 2016 when a contrast MRI finally revealed that Seth has CRMO (Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis), a very rare (1 in 1 million) disease that causes chronic inflammation of the bones in multiple areas. This disease affects children the most because their bones are in a constant state of growth, which is achieved through a careful coordination between osteoblasts (cells which grow bone) and osteoclasts (cells which break it down). In CRMO patients, the osteoclasts become overactive, breaking down too much bone, thereby causing inflammation, bone damage, and pain. Because the disease is so rare, treatment is enormously expensive and still only targets the inflammation and symptoms, but not the root of the problem, which is still unknown. It is also likely that many children suffer from this disease without a diagnosis simply because there is not enough awareness and the tests to confirm (MRI) are very expensive.
To raise money for CRMO awareness, treatments, and ultimately a cure, Seth and his family have partnered with Seattle Children’s Hospital to host the CRMO Warrior Auction. It is being held Friday, May 4, from 6pm-12pm at the beautiful Canterwood Golf & Country Club in Gig Harbor, only about 30 minutes from Seattle. There will be a number of great items to bid on, including a family photography session bundle by James Thomas Long Photography! You can get amazing images for your family and support a great cause! Please come and show your support and help raise money for all kids who suffer from CRMO!
