The day before Johnson and Bin’s adventure engagement session at Deception Pass, much of Western Washington set rainfall records for the last day in February. But with this storm series coming from the Southwest, the Olympic Mountains created a rain shadow effect precisely where we were going! So while back home, things were still quite wet and many rivers were reaching flood stage, we enjoyed sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures! Really, it felt more like late April than the first day of March!

We explored a bunch of different areas at Deception Pass (it really is a huge State Park!) and had an incredible time! There is beauty there literally around every single turn! Funny enough, even though it looked so tranquil out there that day, fighter jets from the nearby military airbase seemed to launch about ever 5 minutes, filling the air with deafening roars. It’s kind of ironic that there would so much noise at such a serene place, but it didn’t affect our images of course! Towards the evening once the jets had stopped circling around, we even marveled at the sudden true quiet, interspersed by the sound of frogs croaking, finally feeling like it was safe to resume their normal activities. We could hear the sound of the water lapping at the shores too!

They both looked amazing and were super fun to photograph! I found out that Johnson and Bin met each other online during the early days of the pandemic – the only way that you really could start meeting anyone back then. Their first “dates” were actually over Zoom and Bin was impressed by how Johnson went to great lengths to make it look like he was in a bar while they were zooming. I was pretty impressed too! Together, they make a really sweet couple and I’m so excited to photograph their wedding coming up at the end of April!
