Being a destination wedding photographer, I get the opportunity to travel to some absolutely amazing locations. I left the bright, sunny skies here in the Pacific Northwest and travelled to rainy Livermore, California for a destination engagement. After growing up in the Seattle area, rain doesn’t really bother me. I learned to just carry on, albeit a bit more wet and damp than I otherwise would have been. Now, as a photographer, I’ve come to actually enjoy the rain! Yes, I kid you not! Sure, sun is great… sometimes… But I love the way landscapes softly recede into the fog, letting your imagination fill in some of the details and creating a sense of romantic isolation – as if you’ve got the world to yourselves… Parks are deserted… Beaches vacant… While everyone else is avoiding the outdoors, we pretty much had it all to ourselves… And what’s not to love about the gorgeous soft, moody light on an overcast day… or reflections in the puddles… or water droplets on the leaves and grass, accentuating the green of Spring… Call me crazy, but if given the choice, I’ll take overcast and some rain almost any day over sunshine when it comes to wedding and engagement photography…
But shooting an engagement session in the rain doesn’t come without certain complications. Waterproof camera equipment is essential of course, but far more important than any logistical considerations is making sure your couple is up for the challenge. There is a common misconception that sunshine is always the best light, but this is absolutely not true… Suffice to say, Ana & Jeff absolutely rocked our little rain adventure! They braved through the off-and-on downpours, slippery mud, and some rough, steep terrain for an absolutely gorgeous and one-of-a-kind engagement session. I loved their outfits, especially Ana’s long blue dress and Jeff’s suit and bowtie. They were the perfect compliment to the romantic backdrop of the Livermore hills.
Congratulations Ana and Jeff! I had an amazing time with you and can’t wait to photograph your wedding this June! I had a wonderful time photographing your sister’s wedding a few years back and look forward to seeing many familiar faces again as well! Thank you for being such troopers out there and trusting me to create these beautiful images for you even in the rain (even when our weather apps kept calling for the rain to end, but to no avail…). You both rock!!!! 🙂 Enjoy the sneak peek at a few of the many highlights!
